When to register for GST/HST (and US sales tax)
Not tax advice. General bookkeeping information only, checked against the official sources linked below (Canada Revenue Agency, IRS, provincial governments and Justice Laws) on Oct 17, 2026. Rules change; check with your accountant before you file.
Canada
You must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters (the small supplier limit). Below that, registering is optional and lets you claim input tax credits.

United States
The US has no federal sales tax. States set their own sales tax and registration rules, so check your state's revenue department.
