United States
US: If your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, you pay self-employment tax and file Schedule SE with your Form 1040. The rate is 15.3%: 12.4% Social Security (up to that year's wage base) plus 2.9% Medicare on all net earnings; an extra 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). You can deduct the employer-equivalent half of your SE tax when figuring adjusted gross income. Your state may have its own rules and tax year – check your state's tax agency.
