Registered charities pay no income tax, can issue official donation receipts and get gifts from other charities, and many of their sales are GST/HST-exempt; they must file the T3010 within 6 months of year-end. A non-profit organization that is not a charity is also exempt from income tax, and files the T1044 return if it has more than $10,000 of investment income, more than $200,000 of assets, or filed before (late penalty $25 a day, up to $2,500).
