Not tax advice. General bookkeeping information only, checked against the official sources linked below (Canada Revenue Agency, IRS, provincial governments and Justice Laws) on Oct 17, 2026. Rules change; check with your accountant before you file.
United States
A 501(c)(3) organization is exempt from federal income tax and donations to it are deductible for donors (no political campaigning, limited lobbying). Annual filing: 990-N if gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less; 990-EZ under $200,000 receipts and $500,000 assets; otherwise Form 990. Not filing for 3 years in a row means the exemption is lost automatically.
