Canada

Equipment that lasts more than a year is a capital asset. Its cost is not expensed in full but claimed over time as capital cost allowance (CCA) by class, e.g. Class 8 (20%) for furniture and equipment, Class 50 (55%) for computers, Class 12 (100%) for small tools. A half-year rule usually applies in the year you buy it.

Equipment is usually depreciated. You can often expense it right away under the de minimis safe harbor (up to $2,500 per item or invoice) or by electing section 179 (2025 limit $2,500,000).
